Ja Morant’s behavior off-the-court in the past few weeks is undefendable. He has caught himself amidst several controversies, and it has led many fans to lose respect for him.
Morant’s incident at the Colorado strip club led to him receiving an 8-game suspension without pay. NBA analyst Jay Williams recently shared his thoughts on the same and believes Morant’s change in behavior in just a week feels like a facade.
“For me to actually believe that a week of counseling when there has been a series of incidents of behavior that’s been shown, that all of a sudden now everything is addressed — I don’t believe that at all. I don’t. To me, this is like a facade a little bit. This is page six out of the crisis management playbook, or manual for athletes.”
Williams then went on to explain why he felt like Morant’s sudden change in behavior feels like a facade to him.
“Number one: What happens? You make a statement where you sound like an actual adult — check. He did that. Number two: You disappear for a while. You let it come out from your camp: ‘I’m receiving help’ — like him actually going to rehab. … And then you kind of initiate coming back: You do a meeting with [NBA commissioner] Adam Silver, you talk it through — and then you do a sit-down and you kind of show remorse and talk about what you’ve learned, and then you try to get back to playing your sport.”
Williams continued how he is still not convinced that Ja has changed. He wants to believe, but he simply cannot in the Memphis Grizzlies superstar right now.
“But that doesn’t make me truly believe that you have truly learned and that there are habits that all of a sudden are going to be changed. I hope they’re going to be changed. It feels like a facade… Very fast. You just went through 20 pages of the manual.”

Williams simply believes everything takes time, and it should have taken at least 20 to 25 days for Morant to return.
Had that happened, Williams would have been easily convinced. But since Ja made a return within a week, he feels like it’s nothing but an act.
Ja Morant On His Recent Controversial Behavior
Whether Jay Williams believes Ja Morant has truly changed or not is his own opinion. Ja has seemingly done everything to at least try and make the fans believe that he is making an effort.
In an exclusive interview with ESPN’s Jalen Rose, Morant talked about the gun incident. He admitted to making a mistake and wanted to correct it as soon as possible.
“It’s not who I am. I don’t condone any type of violence, but I take full responsibility for my actions,” Morant said. “I made a bad mistake. But in the future, I’m going to show everybody who Ja really is, what I’m about, and change this narrative.”
If Ja has truly changed, then he will have a shot at doing so when he returns from the 8-game suspension. Until then, the media and fans will keep throwing shots at Morant and continue to remind him about his off-court controversies.
