• Jaylen Brown’s five-year $304 million deal with the Boston Celtics is the biggest contract in NBA history
• Brown will reportedly earn $60.8 million per year on average with the Celtics
• The Celtics superstar will earn just $24.5 million per season on average after taxes
Jaylen Brown became the talk of the town after signing a five-year $304 supermax contract extension with the Boston Celtics.
Brown’s contract is the largest deal in NBA history, for now. However, the 26-year-old will have to pay a lot of taxes before netting the money from his new contract. Andrew Petcash gave a complete breakdown of Brown’s earnings in a recent Twitter post.
“Jaylen Brown just signed the richest deal in NBA history (5 years $304 million).
Here’s how much he will actually earn:
$60.8M: Salary
$22.5M: Federal Tax
$6M: NBA Escrow
$1.8M: Agent Fee
$1.4M: FICA/Medicare
$1.8M: Jock Tax
$2.7M: Massachusetts Tax
= $24.5M: Net Income.”

While on paper, Brown is set to make $60.8 million per year in salary, in reality, he is taking home just $24.5 million. Something similar happened to Tyrese Haliburton, who will earn just $17.7 million per season after signing a five-year $207 million extension with the Indiana Pacers.
Of course, that’s still not a small amount. But losing so much money in taxes must be somewhat heartbreaking for the Boston Celtics star.
Jaylen Brown’s New Contract Baffled Several NBA Executives
Jaylen Brown is coming off the best season of his NBA career. He averaged 26.6 PPG, 6.9 RPG, and 3.5 APG in the 2022-23 season. Moreover, Brown also earned his first All-NBA team selection.
Despite that, many executives were reportedly shocked after Brown signed the five-year supermax contract extension with the Celtics.
“I’ve had a couple people in opposing front offices tell me something along the lines of, ‘Are the Celtics really gonna pay their 3rd or 4th or 5th best player all this money?’” NBA insider Zach Lowe said on his podcast.
There’s no doubt that Brown’s new contract raised some eyebrows around the league. It’s up to Brown to prove his doubters wrong. If Brown fails to help the Celtics win at least a couple of rings in the future, it will be viewed as a huge failure by most.
