Jeff Green has won an NBA championship after spending 16 seasons in the league, with the Denver Nuggets finally leading him to accomplish his lifelong dream, a dream which was nearly taken away from him in 2012.
Green was finding his feet in the league with the Boston Celtics when he, unfortunately, had to step away for the game to deal with a heart problem. The Denver Post explained how Green had his heart stopped for an hour during an operation to repair his condition.
“Green likely owes his life to a routine physical with the Boston Celtics. It was there that doctors noticed and flagged the condition and soon consulted renowned cardiac surgeon Dr. Lars Svensson of the Cleveland Clinic. Surgery, which included stopping Green’s heart for an hour, happened on Jan. 9, 2012.”
The forward missed the entire 2011-12 campaign before returning for the Celtics in the next season and playing 81 games.
He has enjoyed a long and thriving career since, playing for teams like the Cavaliers, Nets, Wizards, and many others. His career averages are 12.4 points and 4.2 rebounds, and he will forever be known as an NBA champion.
Jeff Green Was Told His NBA Career Is Over
After his illness and surgery, many presumed Green will be unable to have a successful NBA career after. Needless to say, he has proven everyone wrong and commented on the same for the 10th anniversary of his surgery in 2022.
“A lot of GMs, a lot of teams told me I wouldn’t even make it past five (years)/ To be here (at) 10, I’m just blessed, man. I’m thankful … and I’m glad they told me that.”
Jeff Green will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. If the Nuggets elect to not bring him back, there’ll definitely be teams in the NBA that’ll want his veteran leadership and on-court versatility to fill out their rotation.
