Kendrick Perkins is currently an analyst for ESPN and was a former player. As a former player, he has a unique insight into the game of basketball. He has also been on an NBA championship team during his career, so he knows what it takes to win at the highest level.
Though his current calling is being an analyst, Kendrick Perkins has recently revealed that the Los Angeles Lakers offered him an assistant coaching position on ex-coach Frank Vogel’s staff. Perkins claimed that the team wanted someone who was respected by the players, but also someone that would have “Frank Vogel’s back”.

The Lakers offered me an assistant coaching job. You know why? They wanted me to come in and be that guy who could have Frank Vogel’s back, but be respected by the guys in the locker room.
It remains to be seen if Kendrick Perkins will get another assistant coaching opportunity in the future. While he may not have much experience in that department currently, he is a former player that could definitely command the respect of the locker room as he mentions.
The Los Angeles Lakers definitely could have used a different voice in the locker room, but there’s nothing that they can do about their poor season now. All they can hope for is improvements ahead of next season, and perhaps a new coach will get the best out of their stars. There’s no doubt that at this point, the team is simply looking for ways to improve their situation.
At the end of the day, the Los Angeles Lakers have a fair amount of star power, and a duo of Anthony Davis and LeBron James in theory is a good starting point from which to build a championship-caliber squad. While some have suggested that the Lakers should trade both stars and enter a rebuild, it would be best for the team to try and be as competitive as possible and attempt to build around the players they have.
