Marcus Smart became the first guard since Gary Payton to win Defensive Player of the Year for his sensational performances for the Boston Celtics last season.
In a very close DPOY race in 2022, Bam Adebayo felt like he was snubbed for the award and discussed this in an interview, just for Smart to respond on ESPN.
“Bam, come on now. Good guy, a good friend of mine, but me and Bam both know that’s a lie. Things I was doing at the time at my size were different. Last time I recalled, Bam I blocked your shot as well, and that should let you know everything right there.
"Me and Bam both know that's a lie."

Bam didn’t even end up on the All-Defense First Team last season, losing out to Rudy Gobert. Losing the award to Smart and then a 7-game series to the Celtics have definitely built some anti-Celtics feelings in Adebayo.
Bam Adebayo Hoping To Be A Difference Maker This Season
Despite his proven defensive acumen, Adebayo will not be in the race for this year’s award purely because the Miami Heat have been struggling all season. They are currently the 7th seed in the East with a 33-30 record. Many are expecting Adebayo to become more consistent to help stabilize the Heat’s record. Adebayo is averaging 21.2 points and 9.8 rebounds, with 1.2 steals and 0.8 blocks.
Kevin Love’s addition should relieve Bam of offensive responsibility and allow him to lock back into defense. But if the Heat want to make a playoff run, they will need Adebayo to be a genuine second star next to Jimmy Butler. He’s proven he has that ability but it’s a question of whether he can put it together when it matters most.
