Scoring in the NBA dictates everything around how the game is won or lost. A bad scoring night in the modern NBA can mean disaster, as scored regularly cross 100 and has shown a tendency of even reaching the 140s.

Players are scoring at a more voluminous and efficient rate than ever. As a result, Todd Whitehead of Synergy Sports shared a chart of which players are leading the NBA in scoring per 3 minutes of all 4 quarters. That’s 16 spots across the league that is occupied by a list of 9 players.

The first 6 minutes of the game has been dominated by Kristaps Porzingis, who leads minutes 1-3 as well as 4-6. For the next 3 minutes, Kevin Durant steps up as the leader, with Trae Young excelling in the last 3 minutes. The biggest surprise has to be Pacers’ rookie Bennedict Mathurin leading the first 3 minutes of the second quarter, followed by Jalen Brunson, Ja Morant, and Luka Doncic.

Giannis Antetokounmpo leads the scoring in the first 6 minutes of not only the third quarter but also the fourth quarter. Ja Morant and Trae Young excel in the final 6 of the third quarter, while Stephen Curry leads clutch time with the most scoring in the final 6 minutes of a game.

Impact These Players Have On Their Teams

Kristaps Porzingis is known to excel early in games, as larger players usually wear down stamina-wise as the game goes on. Luka Doncic leads the NBA in first-quarter scoring but is at his best while closing out before halftime. The multiple appearances of players like Giannis, Steph, Ja, and Trae is not surprising, given the offensive loads all of them carry for their team.

Steph being the best clutch time scorer in the league this season while the Warriors struggle is unfortunate to see, given the excellence the Warriors’ legend has shown on the court this season. Hopefully, we can see this list evolve over the season as different players challenge the current holders.
