Prior to the start of the 2022-23 NBA season, many were excited about how the Dallas Mavericks will play this season. While most of the excitement stemmed from the presence of Luka Doncic on the roster, the addition of Christian Wood also played some role in it.

However, throughout the season, Christian Wood hasn’t really been involved for the Dallas Mavericks. The 27-year-old has seemingly failed to impress head coach Jason Kidd. Despite Kidd claiming Wood’s minutes will increase over the season, he is still averaging just 29.0 MPG.

On top of that, the Mavericks star will be eligible for a contract extension sooner rather than later. Mavs owner Mark Cuban may have claimed that the organization wants to retain Wood, but there is a very likely chance that Wood may leave the team.

Christian Wood Could Leave The Dallas Mavericks Per NBA Insider

NBA insider Marc Stein recently wrote a report that covered the future of Christian Wood with the Dallas Mavericks. In the report, Stein explained Wood’s future with the Mavericks. He explained that the Mavericks might well be on their way to losing Wood, as they lost Jalen Brunson this summer if they do not extend the 27-year-old’s contract when he’s eligible.

Via Stein Line:

The Mavericks’ Christian Wood, sidelined for his fourth straight game Thursday night in Phoenix, will miss more time than expected thanks to a fractured left thumb on his non-shooting hand. There was initial hope that Wood would be back in the lineup this week, but Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said Thursday night that Wood’s status won’t be updated for another week. Averaging 18.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, Wood is Dallas’ second-leading scorer in his debut season as a Maverick. Yet he remains a player to monitor as the deadline approaches because the Mavericks will have to consider moving the free agent-to-be Wood if they can’t come to terms with him on a contract extension. Wood became eligible for an extension on Dec. 24 and, without a deal, could walk without compensation in the summer after the Mavericks lost Jalen Brunson to New York in similar circumstances last summer.”

Considering the fact that Luka Doncic has been doing all he can this season to keep the Mavericks competitive, losing Christian Wood could heavily impact Doncic’s future with the organization too. With that being said, only time will tell whether fans will continue to see Wood in a Mavericks jersey beyond this season or not.

Wood is currently averaging a solid 18.4 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 1.7 APG, and 1.3 BPG this season. Any team in the NBA would be heavily interested in signing Wood if he indeed decides to part ways with the Mavs.
