With no doors seemingly opening for him in the NBA, Kemba Walker made the big decision to head overseas to continue his professional basketball career. It was announced just last week that he’s signing with the French team AS Monaco Basket on a one-year deal.
Not many have viewed this as a positive for Kemba, who was an All-Star as recently as 2020. Walker’s former teammate and Frenchman Nicolas Batum, however, blasted the notion that this was a bad move for him.
“It’s not given to every good player to move to the 3rd best team in Euroleague and live in South of France.
“Knowing the level of competition in Euroleague, it’s a pretty good move after what Kemba went through the last couples months.”

AS Monaco is indeed one of the best teams in Europe. They just won the French Pro League by beating Victor Wembanyama and his Metropolitans 92 in the final. They also won the French Basketball Cup and finished third in EuroLeague, losing to Olympiacos in the semifinal.
If there was no opportunity in the NBA, then this might have been just about as good as it could have gotten for Kemba. The competition level is going to be fairly high, and he’ll have a chance to shine on the biggest stage in Europe.
Batum wasn’t the only one who had an issue with this tweet, as a EuroLeague fan also highlighted how the situation is actually a great one for Walker in Monaco.
Kemba Walker Hopes To Return To The NBA
Walker is very excited about this new chapter in his life and is fully focused on Monaco for now, but his main goal is to return to the NBA at some point. Kemba is only 33 years old, and he’d feel that he is still capable of playing in the league for a couple more years.
The last we saw of him was with the Dallas Mavericks this past season, where he averaged 8.0 PPG, 1.8 RPG, and 2.1 APG over nine games before being waived by them. He was only playing 16.0 MPG, though, and will be hoping that with an increased role in France, he can show that there is certainly gas left in the tank.
