The regular season is about to end in about a month, and for half the league, that means it’s time to think about their future. The Chicago Bulls and Brooklyn Nets are both in a downward spiral and will be thinking about potential changes or even rebuilds.
Zach LaVine isn’t a disgruntled superstar or anything, but the Chicago Bulls could be looking to move him on. And in a proposed trade by Bleacher Report, he would move to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Ben Simmons and some assets.
Chicago Bulls Receive: Ben Simmons, Cam Thomas, 2023 first-round pick, 2025 first-round pick (via PHX), 2027 first-round pick (HOU holds swap rights), 2027 first-round pick (via PHI)
Brooklyn Nets Receive: Zach LaVine
This would send the Chicago Bulls the picks they might need if they decide to blow up their current version of the team. Ben Simmons is far from a coveted trade asset at this point, but the writer explained why this could work out.
“Bulls will head into the offseason facing Nikola Vucevic’s unrestricted free agency with no realistic hope of improving on what’ll almost surely be a sub-.500 record,” the idea suggests. “Lonzo Ball potentially needing a third knee surgery lowers the odds of him returning healthy in 2023-24 and magically making the Bulls look like they did in their early surge last season.
“No, Ben Simmons doesn’t figure to make Chicago a better team next year. He’s simply matching salary in a swap designed to get the Bulls the assets they’ll need to undertake a deliberate rebuild.”
The Brooklyn Nets need some offense, they have a lot of great defenders at their disposal, so Zach LaVine would probably thrive there. But it’s hard to see the Bulls taking on Ben Simmons’ contract considering how low his stock has fallen around the league.
Should The Chicago Bulls Blow Their Team Up?
The Chicago Bulls still have premium talents like Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan, but their best-case scenario this season is barely making the playoffs. The trade could give them the chance to accumulate some picks for a rebuild.
The Bulls have already been urged by some to try and tank for Victor Wembanyama. But it’s unlikely that the organization would tank blatantly at any point. Without some serious changes though, it’s hard to see them winning anything shortly.
