As Grizzlies star Ja Morant prepares to rejoin his team and close out the regular season, there are still some lingering doubts about his current state of mind.

After being involved in a number of sketchy situations, Morant’s character and leadership have been called into question by various sources and there is a sense that his ongoing process to return may actually just be an act for good PR.

“I’m a little bit worried that this whole thing is just one giant layer of public relations,” said Brian Windhorst. “The video was so bad that it required a maneuver from Ja, it required a maneuver from the Grizzlies and it required a maneuver from the NBA. The story coming out that Ja was in counseling and then he’s asked about it and he says he’s getting Reiki and anxiety breathing techniques. I wasn’t there so I don’t know, but that hit a little funny.

Nobody but Ja himself can say with any certainty how this scandal has changed him, but it’s clear he hasn’t yet won back the trust of the NBA community.

As for his future on the court, there is no doubt that he can still play at a high level and the Grizzlies could still end up as the last team standing when it’s all said and done.

Morant, Grizzlies, Must Validate Their Confidence

Of course, we all know what kind of reputation the Grizzlies have built for themselves. Thanks to Ja and guys like Dillon Brooks and Desmond Bane, the culture in Memphis is one of fearlessness and unbridled confidence.

Unfortunately, with practically no big playoff moment on their track record, it hasn’t been enough to earn the respect of fans and experts alike. Nevertheless, Ja is ready to pull off the impossible.

“When I get back out there, I’m going to be ready to go. Ready to push for a ring,” Morant said.

If Ja can keep his personal life under control, this Grizzlies squad can handle anyone in the West… but they will only go as far as their superstar takes them. If Morant is compromised in any way, it’s going to be that much harder for his team to succeed when the stakes are highest.
