Dillon Brooks rose to fame a few years ago, when the Grizzlies were first marking their place on the map. At first, Brooks was widely praised for his efforts defensively as the Grizzlies were winning games and dominating the West. But eventually, thanks to trash talk and poor shot-making, Brooks became almost universally hated across the league.

During the playoffs, things only got worse for Brooks as his team was getting exposed by the Lakers in the very first round. While it’s been weeks since anyone has last seen them in action, the Grizzlies remain a frequent talking point today. In the case of Dillon Brooks, even Polo G is taking strays any chance he gets. This week, the iconic rapper went viral for throwing some shade toward Brooks in his newest freestyle over Ja Rule’s “New York” beat.

“…Tyler Perry used to hang with Osama,
All I hang with is crooks, and they play with them choppers
If he a lame like Dillon Brooks, I take him straight off the rocker…”

At this point, Brooks’ reputation has almost transcended the NBA itself. While fans were skeptical of his game before the postseason, things got bad for Brooks when he started chirping against LeBron James… and failed to back it up.

“I don’t care, he’s old. I was waiting for that, I was expecting him to do that Game 4 or Game 5. He wanted to say something when I got my 4th foul, he didn’t say nothing early on. But you know, I poke bears. I don’t respect no one until they come in and give me 40,” said Brooks on LeBron James. “So, I pride myself on defense and taking on any challenge.”

What’s Next For Brooks After Final Season With Grizzlies?

Interestingly, the Grizzlies have already told Brooks that he will not be returning to the team, meaning that he’ll have to find somewhere else to play if he wants to stay in the league.

As a free agent, Brooks will have his pick of the pie but it remains to be seen what role he’ll have next season given how much he struggled to close out the season.

The truth is, if Brooks ever wants to recover his reputation and good standing with the NBA community, he’ll have to swallow his pride, keep his head down, and let his game do the talking for him.
