In a recent Instagram post, NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal unveiled his personal Mount Rushmore of basketball, featuring iconic faces in the sport. The image showcased the likenesses of Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar carved onto the symbolic mountain, immortalizing these players in the annals of basketball history and it came with a caption:

“Who’s missing.”

Shaq’s Mount Rushmore selection is notable for the inclusion of players who have made a profound impact on the game across different eras. Michael Jordan, often hailed as the greatest player of all time, symbolizes the dominance of the ’90s and the Chicago Bulls dynasty. LeBron James, a contemporary superstar, has consistently demonstrated excellence, contributing to four championships and rewriting the NBA record books.

Stephen Curry’s presence on the mountain recognizes the transformative influence of the three-point shot and the Golden State Warriors dynasty in the recent decade. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, a towering figure in NBA history, holds the all-time scoring record and symbolizes the dominance of the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Lakers during the ’70s and ’80s.

Interestingly, Shaq’s Mount Rushmore omission of Magic Johnson and Kobe Bryant, two players he shared the court with during his illustrious career, sparks discussion. Magic Johnson was a key figure in the Showtime Lakers era, while Kobe Bryant, a five-time NBA champion, epitomized the Lakers’ success in the 2000s.

The exclusion of Magic and Kobe adds an intriguing layer to Shaq’s personal basketball pantheon, showcasing the diversity of opinions when it comes to crafting the Mount Rushmore of the sport.

Shaquille O’Neal’s Inclusion Of Stephen Curry Over Magic Johnson Is Questionable

Shaquille O’Neal’s recent unveiling of his basketball Mount Rushmore on Instagram, featuring Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and notably, Stephen Curry, has sparked debate within the basketball community. While the inclusion of Jordan, LeBron, and Kareem is almost universally accepted due to their monumental contributions and achievements in the sport, the decision to place Curry over Magic Johnson has raised eyebrows and ignited discussions.

Stephen Curry’s impact on the game is undeniable. His revolutionary style of play, marked by unparalleled three-point shooting and offensive creativity, has transformed basketball, earning him two NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards and leading the Golden State Warriors to four championships. However, the comparison between Curry and Magic Johnson, a basketball icon and a key figure in the Showtime Lakers era, is a complex one.

Magic Johnson, a five-time NBA champion and three-time MVP, played an instrumental role in shaping the history of the Los Angeles Lakers franchise. His ability to play multiple positions, exceptional court vision, and leadership qualities set him apart as one of the greatest point guards in NBA history. In the offseason, Curry proclaimed himself as the greatest point guard of all time, a statement met with resistance from legends like Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan.

Shaq’s decision to include Curry over Magic could be influenced by personal preferences, as Curry is known to be one of Shaq’s favorite players. Nevertheless, the omission of Magic Johnson from this symbolic Mount Rushmore is certain to generate discussions about the criteria for selecting basketball’s all-time greats and the subjective nature of such decisions.
