Shaun Livingston was a guest on the Knuckleheads podcast, where was asked to make a starting five, naming only his former teammates. Livingston named Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant from his time with the Warriors, and Joe Johnson and Kevin Garnett from his brief stint with the Brooklyn Nets.
“I gotta be in it? Steph [Curry], KD [Kevin Durant], Ticket [Kevin Garnett], and then… We’re small so we’re gonna space it out so I need shooters around me. Probably going to go with Joe Johnson. Shoutout Joe, Iso Joe.”
(1:36:25 onwards)
Livingston got the chance to play with some great players during his career in the NBA. His decision to go with Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant is obvious, as he won multiple championships with both players on the Warriors, and many consider their 2017 team to be the greatest in NBA history.
Livingston himself was a crucial part of the Warriors teams that won three NBA championships. While mostly coming off the bench, Livingston provided important scoring for the team when some of the star players took a breather. Livingston also had the ability to make some important shots for the Warriors, especially in clutch time.
As for Kevin Garnett and Joe Johnson, there is no doubt that neither player was past their best when Livingston played with them on the Nets. But both KG and Iso Joe are two of the most dynamic offensive players in modern NBA history, so their inclusion also makes sense in this list.
One can imagine what Livingston would have been able to achieve if he got to play with Kevin Garnett and Joe Johnson when all three players were in their primes. Perhaps Livingston would have more championships in his trophy cabinet.
Livingston Answers Some Difficult Questions
In the same interview, Livingston was asked to answer some difficult questions. First, he was asked what his most expensive purchase ever was. Livingston was then asked to play start-bench-trade with three modern players – Luka Doncic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Damian Lillard. Livingston gave his answer, and it wasn’t one Shai fans would like to hear.
“The Bentley was it man. I just got the tint, and did a little paint job… I kept it clean. That was the first purchase. I didn’t do much… Probably right now, I’m going with [start] Luka, [bench] Dame, and [trade] Shai.”
(1:42:35 onwards)
Livingston holds Luka Doncic in high regard, considering him the best point guard out of the three players mentioned. And considering the fact that he has had the most playoff success out of the three, and found it most recently, it makes sense. Doncic and the Mavericks are expected to continue to be contenders in the West.
One of Livingston’s former teammates who didn’t make his starting five is Klay Thompson, who will now be a teammate of Luka Doncic, having signed with the Mavericks. Perhaps Doncic can replicate Livingston’s championship success with Thompson in the years to come.
