Steve Nash is the brand new Brooklyn Nets head coach and his players are excited to see what the Canadian is going to bring to Brooklyn next season. He’ll have the chance to coach a very good team, led by Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, which also counts with other great players like Spencer Dinwiddie. The 27-year-old will be an important piece for the Nets, especially leading the second unit of the team.
He recently had the chance to talk about his new head coach and explained what Nash had to do to keep things under control. According to Dinwiddie, it’s all about managing the egos in the team, just like Phil Jackson did with the Bulls and the Lakers.
“And to me coaching at this level, especially with the talent that we have, it’s like 80% psychologist, 10% temperament, 10% x’s and o’s,” Dinwiddie said on his interview with Forbes’ Shlomo Sprung. “It’s mostly about managing the egos. That’s why Phil Jackson was phenomenal. He knew how to speak to Kobe. He knew how to speak to Michael.”
Spencer also addressed the controversy around Nash’s signing with the Nets. The point guard agreed that white privilege is a thing but he made it clear that Nash has the knowledge to take over at Brooklyn.
“Obviously white privilege is a thing, 1000%,” Dinwiddie said. “But in this situation, he’s only one of the most qualified basketball players of all time and is friends with the stars of our team and the GM of the team [Sean Marks, who played with Nash in Phoenix]. It kind of makes sense beyond the fact that he doesn’t have coaching experience.”
The Nets are ready to take their game to the next level. He didn’t join the team in the bubble after testing positive for COVID-19. Before the suspension, he posted 20 points, 6.8 assists and 3.5 rebounds per contest.
