  • Anthony Davis was chosen for the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team over Dwight Howard
  • Stan Van Gundy, Howard’s former coach, has claimed that it should never have happened
  • Stan Van Gundy says there is no way Anthony Davis’ career has been better than Dwight Howard’s

The NBA named its Top 75 Players of all time on its 75th anniversary in 2021. And one of the most noticeable omissions from the list was Dwight Howard. Some current players were on the list, too, like Anthony Davis, despite not having as many accolades as Howard. Stan Van Gundy spoke up about this recently.

“To me, the only guys you could even talk about in his league at that time [of Howard’s peak, from roughly 2008-12] were LeBron and Kobe,” Van Gundy said, as per Sports Illustrated. “I think Anthony Davis is great, but at the time, they selected (the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team in 2022). I mean, it’s not close.”

“You cannot make a case that Anthony Davis had a better career than Dwight Howard, that’s absolutely ridiculous.”

Considering that Dwight Howard is currently playing in Taiwan, Van Gundy’s opinion may seem a bit ridiculous, but that’s because Howard’s prime has become underrated. He took the Orlando Magic to the NBA Finals as the No. 1 option, and more stats back up his case too.

Dwight Howard Deserved To Make The Team Over Anthony Davis Based On Accolades

Dwight Howard’s accolades are severely underrated. Although he was a role player, he did win an NBA championship. More impressively, Howard has been an All-Star eight times, to go along with three Defensive Player Of The Year awards.

Dwight Howard also made it to eight All-NBA Teams including five First Team selections, and five All-Defensive Teams including four First Team selections.

In comparison to this, Anthony Davis has never been the Defensive Player Of The Year, been an All-Star eight times too, and made it to four All-NBA Teams and four All-Defensive Teams. When it comes to accolades, Howard is more decorated.

The decline in Dwight Howard’s stock occurred because his peak ended after about six years, and he spent a long time as a role player. Anthony Davis could surpass him if he can stay consistent, but as of now, Dwight Howard is more deserving than Anthony Davis.
