• Stephen A. Smith reacted to Snoop Dogg saying he smokes 11 blunts a day
• Smith jokingly said he didn’t want to use his iconic line ‘Stay off the weed’ with Dogg in the interest of their friendship
• The NBA drug testing policy no longer includes marijuana as a banned substance
Stephen A. Smith has made his disdain for marijuana use very clear, especially when it hurts people’s ability to earn. This includes players who get fined or arrested for the same or even the average person who spends too much time on the substance and isn’t productive.
When he found out that Snoop Dogg smoked 11 blunts a day, he refrained from using his ‘stay off the weed’ line. That was in the interest of their friendship and because he knows the substance doesn’t impact Snoop’s ability to earn.
“Snoop Dogg, my brother, y’all know how tight we are. I saw a video of him recently. He revealed that he smokes about 11 blunts per day. He showed off his collection. That’s Snoop Dogg doing what Snoop Dogg does. I will never tell him to ‘Stay off the weed’! I’ll never tell him that. We might lose our friendship if I told him that… It does not impede his ability to earn an honest living so I ain’t knocking him.”
Stephen A. has gone on various rants about marijuana use with athletes with the proclamation they ‘stay off the weed’. Smith knows it’s a catchphrase that has made him incredibly popular and he often uses it whenever applicable.
Stephen A. Smith’s Problem With Marijuana Use
After being criticized for his position on weed over the last few years, Smith clarified his stance on the usage of the substance. He explained the surroundings in which he grew up and his familiarity with the substance while saying he doesn’t care about people who are successful and do it, as long as it isn’t affecting the money they earn.
“Can I address the weed issue? Yes. I’m from Hollis, Queens bro. New York City. My family’s from here. You think I don’t have relatives that smoke weed? You think I don’t have boys that smoke some weed? Okay, I’ve never said a word about somebody smoking weed. If it ain’t costing them money. My issue is, how the hell are you sitting there, you worked all your life getting here. And you gonna blow 6 figures, 7 figures? On weed? I ain’t never seen a joint cost that much in my life.”
Smith is looking after the athletes. Whether it’s wrong or right is a different issue, but there are rules in place that can affect an athlete caught using these substances. Thankfully, the NBA has recently made changes to its drug policy that will not penalize their players for marijuana use.
Marijuana Use In The NBA
Multiple players have openly discussed their use of marijuana, with Kevin Durant being an open proponent of the substance. Stephen Curry has previously implied he partakes in the recreational substance as well. With many former players also advocating that players be allowed to use marijuana, the NBA finally amended its drug policy to make the substance legal.
The problem with marijuana use comes when players are often in trouble with the law for possession. Marijuana isn’t legal at the federal level, so even if a player takes weed from one state where it’s legal to another where it isn’t, they can be punished under federal law.
Many players in recent years have had marijuana-related arrests including Alex Caruso and Montrezl Harrell. As with any substance, people should try to stay away from it, but if they do use it, it should be with great caution and moderation.
