After winning their fourth championship in the Stephen Curry era, the Golden State Warriors were favored by many fans and analysts to win the championship this year and repeat as the ultimate winners of basketball. Ultimately, the Dubs fell short on those expectations and now many are wondering what went wrong.
Besides some glaring issues from guys like Klay Thompson and Jordan Poole, there was just a general lack of cohesion all season that Curry himself says played a role in how it ended.
“You can probably fill in the blanks. From training camp until now. It’s just the reality we were living in and trying to keep things positive and optimistic around what we were trying to accomplish. We were one of the last eight teams, there were no moral victories at all. It’s just understanding that in Game 6 of the Conference Semi-Finals, you have to push it to the end. So there’s a lot of pride in what we accomplished but there’s also an understanding that it wasn’t good enough and we have to come back better next year and re-establishing ourselves as a legitimate championship contender because we weren’t this year.”
Curry said it himself: the Warriors were not title contenders. While Steph tried his best to overcome his team’s shortcomings, their lack of depth and focus was an issue they could not overcome and it can be traced all the way to Draymond’s punch to Jordan Poole back in September.
Now, there is nothing left for the Warriors to do but look ahead and do whatever they can to ride the final wave of this star-studded core.
Warriors Still Believe They Can Win With Curry And Klay
This summer, look for Golden State to move on from guys like Jordan Poole and Moses Moody as they look to fill out their bench and build a true contender around their stars.
Their best days may be behind them, but the team still believes they have enough left in the tank to power several more championship runs…
“Members inside the Warriors organization still believe their core can compete for titles because Stephen Curry remains a top-five player in the NBA and both Draymond Green and Klay Thompson aren’t showing signs of a steep decline,” per Shams Charania.
Only time will tell if the Warriors dynasty can live on into 2024 and beyond, but it’s clear that they don’t have enough right now. Unless Bob Myers makes some moves this summer and severely overhauls the roster, the Warriors may be stuck teetering on mediocrity until Curry’s decline.
