• Gilbert Arenas claimed a large majority of NBA players have low basketball IQ
• Arenas pointed to players coming to the NBA after just a year in college as a reason for it
• Arenas was reacting to Draymond Green’s comments on players in the league lacking basketball IQ
Draymond Green made some waves recently due to his comments during an appearance on The Pat Bev podcast. Green stated that less than 60% of the players in the NBA have basketball IQ and added that he was being a bit generous with that number.
Those comments were brought up to Gilbert Arenas, but they ended up being a bit misinterpreted. When Arenas was asked if he agreed with Green that 60% of the players have low basketball IQ, he claimed the number is even higher.
“Only 60%?… The league is younger,” Arenas said on Gil’s Arena. “They’re coming straight from AAU, spend one year in college, it’s not gonna have the IQ of the 80s and 90s you know, players that really understand the game.
“So 60%? I’m thinking 80-85,” Arenas continued. “I mean half these players you can see, when they get out of time out, coach drew the play up, they sitting there like. ‘Where’d I go?'”
(starts at 39:55 mark):
You’d suppose Arenas makes somewhat of a fair point when he says the players are just not educated enough about the game considering how quickly they make it to the league. Sure, they’re great when it comes to athleticism, but a lot of them have to be taught about the game itself. Rashad McCants also claimed that the lower basketball IQ is why the game has been simplified in the NBA now compared to when they were in the league.
Gilbert Arenas Took Shots At Bol Bol
Arenas certainly isn’t someone who shies away from speaking what’s on his mind. When asked about Bol Bol signing with the Phoenix Suns, he blasted the young big man.
He stated Bol would disappoint in Phoenix, just as he has done on the other teams that he has been on. Arenas also somewhat bizarrely compared him to a pretty woman with a bad attitude.
Arenas had, however, claimed previously that he asked LeBron James to recruit Bol to the Los Angeles Lakers. He believed LeBron would be the one who could pull out that dominant side in the big man.
