Dillon Brooks had one of the most humiliating playoff exits in recent memory after talking up a big game that he couldn’t live up to in the first round of the NBA Playoffs.
After calling LeBron James old and trash-talking him repeatedly, Brooks had a negative impact on the Grizzlies as the Lakers eliminated them in six games. The upcoming free agent now stands to see his Memphis tenure end this summer.
“There is also a growing doubt leaguewide about the Grizzlies’ appetite to re-sign Brooks as he heads to free agency,” said Marc Stein.
Brooks was earning $11 million this season and is now going into the open market as a free agent. His season averages of 14.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists are way lower than what he has produced in years prior, where he emerged as the Grizzlies’ third-best player before the emergence of Desmond Bane.
Will Dillon Brooks Stay With Memphis?
It’s unlikely that Brooks can attract major offers from any other contender in the NBA this season. He has seemingly offended many players around the league like Draymond Green, Donovan Mitchell, Kyrie Irving, and more. Being an enforcer and a trash-talker for your team is one thing, but blaming the media when your words come back to haunt you doesn’t paint you in a good light ultimately.
Memphis may find value in Brooks’ perimeter defense and stretchability, even though he hasn’t been a good shooter this season. The $18-20 million he was expected to make at the start of the season before all this negative attention is out the window, and he’ll be hoping to get somewhere around his current deal, as a best-case scenario.
