Tim Hardaway Jr. Thinks Luka Doncic Can Be A Top 5 NBA Player Of All Time

Tim Hardaway Jr. thinks Luka Doncic's ceiling is incredibly high and that he could be a Top 5 player of all time in the NBA.

Luka Doncic put up 42 points and 10 rebounds against the Miami Heat on Saturday night, but it was not enough to get the Dallas Mavericks a win. With 4 games left in the season, the Mavericks are virtually out of the play-in tournament.

Individually though, Luka Doncic has had a phenomenal season. An All-Star starter, he could also make All-NBA First Team. And his teammate Tim Hardway Jr. has a lot of faith in his potential. Asked if Luka could be Top 5 all-time on the Buckets podcast, Hardway Jr. said, “Yeah, I think so.”

“I mean, everybody sees it I mean, there’s not much for me to say. I mean, the triple-double machine does everything you want a player to do. I mean, he’s young; still, he’s only just turned what? 24? Like, [the] guy is not even in his prime, which is scary. So, I mean, I’m just gonna be like everybody [that’s] excited to see how the future plays out.”

(starts at 32:22 minutes)

This is a massive vote of confidence in Doncic’s ability, especially when one thinks about the names that wouldn’t be considered Top 5 in NBA history. Many argue that Kobe Bryant, Wilt Chamberlain, Tim Duncan, Stephen Curry, Larry Bird, and Shaquille O’Neal are all not good enough to be named in the Top 5. When those names don’t make it in for a lot of people, it’s hard to imagine that Luka will.

His achievements so far are amazing, to be sure. Luka is already a 4-time All-Star at 24 and has been named to the All-NBA First Team thrice. An MVP award feels like it’s only a matter of time. Ultimately, any discussion about all-time ranking will depend on rings, though, so playoff success will have to start coming in soon. The concern for Hardway Jr. and the Mavericks might be that it’s not with them, though.

There Is Already Speculation About Luka Doncic Leaving The Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks have lost 6 of their last 7 games. While Luka Doncic has enjoyed a career year statistically, he could miss out on All-NBA First Team honors if his team can’t even make the play-in tournament. He admitted that he has not been feeling very good in recent times, and that has already led to speculation about him potentially leaving the franchise.

After a loss against the Sixers, fans joked about Doncic being recruited by Joel Embiid. The New York Knicks have been named as a team Luka could potentially find himself on. And there is always speculation that he could go to the Nuggets, considering his friendship with Nikola Jokic. While his all-time ranking will only be known as his career progresses, the Mavericks should be more concerned about whether it will happen on their team if things don’t improve soon.
