Devin Booker Wanted To Build A Superteam 4 Years Ago: “I’d Like The Superteam To Come To Me”

Devin Booker had his plans for the Phoenix Suns. He wanted to build a super team, and four years later, he has one, with Kevin Durant’s arrival completing their already stacked roster.

“Dynasties only last for so long,” Booker told Yahoo! Sports. “I’m not wishing trades upon any of the superteams. But …I’d like to build a superteam. I’d like the superteam to come to me.”

Back then, Booker was referencing Draymond Green recruiting Kevin Durant to the Golden State Warriors in 2016 — a move that resulted in the veteran winning two NBA championships.

After inking a mammoth five-year, $158 million extension with Phoenix then, Booker said the first few years were all about trying to understand every nook and cranny of the league.

“Then my second year, I’m a player. I played pretty well in my second year. In my third year, now I gotta solidify myself. Now I’m here and it’s about winning for me.”

Forward to the ongoing 2022-23 season, the guard has a shot at winning his maiden title, alongside seasoned pro, Chris Paul. Durant to the Suns was one of the blockbuster trades ahead of the trade deadlines, one that Booker is mighty pleased about.

Devin Booker Believes The Phoenix Suns Aren’t A Superteam

Contrary to popular belief that Durant’s foray into Phoenix made the side a bonafide superteam, Booker had a rather different outlook.

Per Suns writer Gerald Bourquet, the 26-year-old had a straight-faced response. “Well, we only had one All-Star this year. That’s KD…,” he said. “I don’t do titles and stuff, that’s for you guys and everybody else. I know we have really talented people but I think we have to finish what we’re trying to do. That’s my main focus.”

The Suns and Durant were off to a good start in the latter’s debut. The forward finished with 23 points in their 105-91 win over the Charlotte Hornets, and his chemistry with the team looks perfect at the time of writing.

All things considered, it looks like Booker’s got his wish, and the Suns are in the perfect position to land their maiden title that’s been elusive thus far. It remains to be seen if they can indeed make a deeper run in the playoffs.
