In the aftermath of a 38-point masterpiece, Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard is closer than ever to making franchise history. And as Dame closes in on Portland’s All-Time scoring record, the wins keep coming for the Blazers, who are now 15-12 on the season and winners of four of their last five games.
But as Lillard told the media after the win, being among the greatest Trail Blazers ever is a goal he’s had from day one, and with only a small number of points left before becoming the team’s All-Time points leader, it’s fair to say that Lillard is already well on his way to securing that title.
“I think everybody here knows, it’s documented that I’ve always said I want to be the best, to be the guy where when they say ‘Who was the best to come through here?’ I want people to look and say ‘It was Dame,’” said Lillard, via Casey Holdahl of NBA.com. “Obviously scoring isn’t everything but when you start to get up in these types of numbers, that’s a major thing. And the fact that it’s Clyde Drexler, anybody who knows the history of the NBA is going to respect and honor that. Being a part of one organization for this long and being able to sustain this level of success and to catch a record like that, it means a lot to be in that position. And once it does happen, I think it’ll be just a major step in even furthering the direction of being what I want to be as far as being a Trail Blazer. It’s a major accomplishment.”
Can Damian Lillard Win A Title With The Trail Blazers?
Lillard is undoubtedly one of the most talented point guards in the game, but his lack of success in the postseason remains one of the biggest blemishes of his career. While some would argue that he’s a winner already, his lack of a championship really holds him back from being considered one of the best.
According to Dame, however, the Blazers can be a contender as currently constructed.
“I think we can be a championship team,” Lillard said. “We’ve got a good mix of veterans with experience and young talented guys. Right now in the league, that’s who you’re seeing are the most successful teams. It’s no longer look at this super team over here. It’s who’s got the talent, who can get up and down and score, who’s fearless, who defends, who has experience and leadership? It’s all of those things that give you a shot to be one of those final teams. You’re seeing it across the league, and I think we fall into that category…”
No matter how much faith you have in the Trail Blazers this season, what Lillard brings to the table is undeniable. As one of the best shooters and scorers in the game and one of the league’s top 75 players, No. 0 has already marked his place in his history books.
At some point this season, he will do it again when he passes Clyde Drexler on the All-Time Trail Blazers scoring list.
