Anthony Davis has been on an inspired run of form lately, proving to the league that he is still one of the best players in the NBA.

He had a 40-point performance against the Houston Rockets tonight to help the Lakers improve their record to 40-38, as they now sit half a game out of the 5th seed. Davis, after the game, said that the Lakers are getting greedy and want to avoid the play-in tournament.

“Control what we can control. Every time we step onto the floor, we control our destiny. We have got to go out there and win basketball games and let the rest take care of itself. We can’t control what other teams do but we control us going out and playing with a sense of urgency, effort, energy, and collective basketball. The more we do that, the better position we are in not to play in the play-in tournament… We getting greedy, and we are not satisfied. We are coming in and doing what we’re supposed to do. We can come in and compete against any team.”

The Lakers are tied for losses on the season with the Clippers, Warriors, and Pelicans, with all 3 teams having lost 38 games up until now. The Warriors and Clippers have 41 wins while the Lakers and Pelicans have 40. Seeds 5 and 6 are very much in the balance still, with some interesting fixtures coming soon.

How Will The Playoff Race Shake Out?

The Minnesota Timberwolves are still in the race to be top-6 but a shock loss to the Portland Trail Blazers tonight has hurt their chances of climbing up. Ultimately, it looks like it will come down between the Warriors, Clippers, Lakers, and Pelicans. With a matchup between the Clippers and Lakers headed our way on Wednesday, it may be the most crucial matchup of the season.

The Lakers also have a tricky game against the Phoenix Suns after LAC, with their next game coming against Utah on Tuesday. They’ll close their season with another game with the Jazz, which may be looking to lose games to ensure the Dallas Mavericks stay ahead of them in the standings to improve their lottery odds. The Lakers may genuinely be a top-6 team, something Darvin Ham set out to achieve at the trade deadline.
