The Golden State Warriors pulled off one of the biggest trades of last season when they acquired Jimmy Butler from the Miami Heat, and it looks like they’re thinking about making a splash again. NBA insider Chris Haynes reported on NBA on Prime that the Warriors, who are eighth in the West with a 16-15 record, are interested in Dallas Mavericks big man Anthony Davis, but face one problem.
“I came on last week, and I told you about what the Warriors were looking for,” Haynes said. “Looking for a big man, a rim-running big man, protect the paint, lob threat. I was told they’re contemplating making a case to acquire Anthony Davis as well. I was told that Dallas was not that fascinated with what Golden State has on its books.
“And so if the Golden State Warriors did really want to make a true play at Anthony Davis, they would likely have to acquire some more assets or involve another team,” Haynes added. “The Warriors are really trying to figure out ways to assure themselves that they have a defensive dominant starting center going into the second half of the season to help Stephen Curry and Draymond Green out for a championship push.”
Haynes had previously reported about the Warriors looking to bring in an athletic center. The three names he mentioned then were Daniel Gafford, Nic Claxton, and Robert Williams III. They are all quality role players for whom you wouldn’t have to give up too many valuable assets.
Davis, though, is still a star. The 32-year-old is averaging 20.5 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.6 blocks per game for the Mavericks in 2025-26.
Davis recorded back-to-back 30-point games against the New Orleans Pelicans and the Denver Nuggets on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, to show he is still capable of having dominant outings. Unfortunately, he then went down with a groin injury in the Christmas Day game against the Warriors and will now be missing a few games.
This latest setback means Davis still hasn’t played six games in a row since the Mavericks acquired him from the Los Angeles Lakers in February 2025. The injury concerns mean it’s difficult to estimate what exactly his value is on the market.
The Mavericks are certainly not going to get a massive haul for Davis, and you’d like to think they know that as well. The fact that Hayes says they don’t like whatever the Warriors might have to offer is interesting.
You’d imagine Jonathan Kuminga would be the asset the Warriors are most willing to part with. The Mavericks don’t really need a forward, though, as they have Cooper Flagg and PJ Washington. This would mean finding a third team that would like to bring in Kuminga, which complicates matters.
Warriors Expected To Trade Jonathan Kuminga Before The Deadline
As for Kuminga, Hayes says the expectation around the NBA is that he won’t be a Warrior beyond the trade deadline.
“[Rival teams] do not expect Jonathan Kuminga to still be a member of the Golden State Warriors past the trade deadline,” Haynes stated. “So, he is a name to watch as this time goes on. Kuminga has been very frustrated. I was told he has had numerous meetings with Steve Kerr, and those two just haven’t been on the same page. So at some point after January 15th, rival executives expect Kuminga and the Warriors to part ways via a trade.”
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has denied having any personal issues with Kuminga, but their relationship hasn’t always seemed all too healthy from the outside. The forward hasn’t played a single minute in six of the last seven games, and a parting of ways is what is best for all parties.
It will be interesting to see what the Warriors can get for Kuminga, as his value is probably at an all-time low at the moment.
