The Golden State Warriors seemed to have caught a lucky break heading into their clash against the Denver Nuggets, as Nikola Jokic was unavailable for the game.

A third straight win seemed to be on the cards, but the Warriors suffered an embarrassing 112-110 defeat instead, and head coach Steve Kerr criticized his players afterward.

“Middle of the second quarter, we had total control of the game,” Kerr said. “And we stopped playing and we just lost our focus at both ends. Gave up a ton of offensive rebounds, missed box-outs. Offensively, had several mindless possessions in a row, throwing the ball away, a bunch of shot turnovers, just bad shots.”

The Warriors were up by 15 points at one stage in the second quarter but fell apart the rest of the way. They were only up 61-58 at halftime, and by then, Denver had all the momentum. The Nuggets then went up by double digits in the fourth quarter, but the Warriors mounted a furious comeback in the closing stages. Klay Thompson first missed a three-pointer that could have won them the game and his second attempt, moments later, was blocked as the Nuggets held on to win.

Thompson finished the game with 25 points but shot just 9-28 from the field and 5-16 from beyond the arc. His splash brother Stephen Curry was even worse, as he shot just 8-28 from the field and 2-14 from three to finish with 21 points. This loss meant the Warriors are now 41-38 on the season and have dropped to the sixth seed.

Stephen Curry Remains Confident The Warriors Can Make A Championship Run

The Warriors now have a horrendous 9-30 record on the road after this latest loss, and there are a lot of question marks surrounding the defending champions. Curry, however, believes they can absolutely make a championship run and feels they are a force to be reckoned with.

Andrew Wiggins’ potential return would certainly be a big boost to their hopes of retaining their title, but even he can only do so much. The Warriors might well be able to flip a switch in the postseason and look like their usual selves, but until we see that, it’s fair to question whether this team has what it takes to win it all this season.
