Gary Trent Jr. will remain a Raptor. The guard opted into his $18.5 million final-year player contract with Toronto.

The development was reported by NBA insider Chris Haynes who added that he and the Raptors are working towards a long-term deal that will see him spend more time in Toronto.

He was acquired by the Raptors via sign-and-trade from the Portland Trail Blazers during the 2020-21 season and inked a multiyear contract with them the following summer. He had a productive 2022-23 season averaging 17.4 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists.

Ahead of the trade deadline last season, the 24-year-old was linked with numerous teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers. But the recent update shows that he will stay put with the Raptors.

This comes on the back of the Raptors generating the buzz amid rumors of a will-they-won’t-they rebuild scenario. It’s entirely possible that this would be the first sign of the Raptors keen to run it back with their existing roster.

It Will Be An Important Summer For The Raptors

After parting ways with former head coach Nick Nurse, the Raptors are set to start a new run and their new replacement, Rajakovic, comes off as a bold signing.

The franchise has maintained its stance to win a championship once again, but it will need more firepower on its side to compete for a title. As it stands, franchise superstar Fred VanVleet has declined his player option for 2023-24, but sources suggest that he has not ruled out a return to Toronto.

Only time will tell how the Raptors’ roster will shape up ahead of the 2023-24 season, but for now, they can heave a sigh of relief with Trent Jr. back in the fold.
