Monty Williams is one of the many high-profile head coaches available on the market this season and it seems he is being careful about picking his next job.
Marc Stein shared on his Substack that Monty Williams has declined to sign up with the Detroit Pistons after the rebuilding franchise made an aggressive offer to the former Suns’ coach.
“League sources say that the Pistons, even after they failed to win the Victor Wembanyama Sweepstakes in the draft lottery, went through with their intent to make a big-money offer to Williams in hopes that the former Suns’ coach could be lured straight into a new job. It appears that the plan, which we revealed in the enclosed story from inside the Drawing Room at the draft lottery in Chicago last week, was unsuccessful. Williams has three years remaining on his Suns deal valued in excess of $20 million.”
The Pistons had the worst record in the NBA this season, with franchise star Cade Cunningham spending most of the season injured. With attractive young pieces but no clear intention to compete for a title immediately, it’s smart for Williams to hold off on possibly being offered the 76ers or Bucks job.
An Offseason Dominated By Coaches
This year’s free agency class will have intrigue around the future of Kyrie Irving and James Harden, but not a lot of big names apart from them are available. The coaching market, on the other hand, has some big names available with multiple contending teams hoping to get a new coach.
The 76ers, Bucks, and Suns are the three most attractive jobs. The former coaches from all three spots are in the running for jobs with the team that didn’t fire them, along with coaches like Nick Nurse and Frank Vogel. Outside the three contending franchises, the Pistons and Raptors are also looking for a new voice to come into their locker room this summer.
